TM: Cat and Ben pay tribute to Sam Rubin after death at 64

This Morning fans have reacted after an old clip of Phillip Schofield appeared on Monday's edition of the show. Hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard paid a moving tribute to American journalist Sam Rubin, who has died at the age of 64.

The co-presenters spoke to Ross King, who was calling in via video link from New York. On Friday morning, it was announced that Sam had suffered a heart attack and tragically died at an LA hospital.

The ITV presenters showed a tear-filled tribute to Sam, with clips of the journalist visiting the daytime programme in years gone by. One photograph showed Sam speaking to former hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby in 2018.

One person reacted on X: "#ThisMorning@thismorning My god, they just showed a clip of Phil on screen." Another person chimed in: "I’m glad they’ve given Sam a proper tribute instead of just a quick 2 minute montage; he deserves to be remembered #thismorning."

A third chimed in: "RIP #SamRubin of #KTLAFamily and #ThisMorning and condolences to his family. His warmth came through the TV screen."

Sam Rubin was a longtime entertainment anchor, whose morning interviews with celebrities on the LA television station KTLA 5 became a popular programme for viewers.

Paying tribute to Sam, the official social media account of This Morning stated: "We have very heavy hearts this weekend with the news from Los Angeles that our Hollywood reporter Sam Rubin has died at the age of 64.

"Sam was an Emmy-winning entertainment correspondent and presenter for Los Angeles’ No 1 morning show on KTLA, and regularly broadcast live into This Morning."

The tribute added: "He woke up Tinseltown every day for decades with his likeable charm and knowledgeable take on the movie world, he was on first name terms with the stars and became affectionately known as ‘Hollywood Sam’. We will miss him."

Many high-profile celebrities were saddened by Sam's passing and paid moving tributes to him online. Actor Ben Stiller wrote: "So sad and sorry to hear of Sam Rubin’s passing. Consummate pro.

"I did my first interview with him in something like ‘93, and countless times over the years. He loved actors and movies. He made everyone feel comfortable and it was always fun and easy. He was an institution. We have lost him way too soon."

Since his dramatic exit from This Morning was announced last year, Phillip Schofield has not been shown on the programe. Recently, fans claimed he had been "airbrushed" out of an interview with Fern Britton, as the ITV show played a throwback clip of the star co-presenting with a young Ben Shephard, instead of alongside her regular co-host, Phil.

Fern hosted This Morning with Phillip from 2002 until 2009. The presenter has rarely been spotted on television since he admitted to having an "unwise but not illegal affair" with a younger male This Morning colleague, before resigning from ITV.

This Morning airs daily on ITV and ITVX at 10am.
