Report finds Colorado was built on $1.7 trillion of land expropriated from tribal nations

  • By GRAHAM LEE BREWER - Associated Press

A report published by a Native American-led nonprofit examines in detail the dispossession of Indigenous homelands in Colorado, quantifies the value of the land and resources taken and outlines the state education system’s omission of that history in its curriculum. The report shared first with The Associated Press and published this week identifies 10 tribal nations that have “aboriginal title, congressional title, and treaty title to lands within Colorado” and lays out how the land was legally and illegally taken. It puts the value of that land at more than $1.7 trillion and more than $546 million in mineral extraction.

Scotland fans making their team feel at home ahead of Euro 2024 opener against host nation Germany

  • By DANIELLA MATAR - AP Sports Writer

Scotland supporters are doing their best to make their team feel right at home in Germany ahead of its opening game against the host nation at the European Championship. Tens of thousands of fans have arrived in Munich over the past few days, turning the streets into a riot of color and noise. And more were expected ahead of Friday evening’s game. Scotland hasn’t played a European Championship match abroad since 1992 and its supporters, nicknamed the Tartan Army, are certainly making the most of it. “It feels as if most of the country are (here),” Scotland captain Andy Robertson said.

AP Decision Notes: What to expect in Oklahoma's state primaries

  • By MAYA SWEEDLER - Associated Press

Voters will decide almost 60 contested primaries for the U.S. House of Representatives and both chambers of the Oklahoma state legislature. The race to watch Tuesday is the Republican primary in the state’s 4th Congressional District, where 10-term incumbent Tom Cole has drawn a deep-pocketed challenger self-funding a long-shot campaign. Cole could face a runoff election if his challengers collectively keep his support under 50%. There are two other U.S. representatives facing challengers. In the Tulsa-based 1st District, incumbent Kevin Hern will compete against Paul Royse. And in the 3rd District, Frank Lucas has two challengers.

Euro 2024: Familiar foes Spain and Croatia clash again in group opener

  • By CIARÁN FAHEY - AP Sports Writer

Spain’s bid for a fourth European Championship title begins against Croatia in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, where the final will be played next month. The teams know each other well after meeting in each of the previous four editions of the tournament. Spain knocked out Croatia after a 5-3 extra-time win in the round of 16 at Euro 2020. Croatia will be led again by the evergreen Luka Modrić, who at 38 will be playing at the tournament for the fifth time. Modrić joins his national teammates after winning a Spanish league and Champions League double with Real Madrid.

Japan has no plans to seek a suspension of Osprey flights despite restrictions in US

  • By MARI YAMAGUCHI - Associated Press

Japan’s defense chief says Japanese and American V-22 Ospreys are being safely operated in the country. Defense Minister Minoru Kihara said Friday that he has no plans to request a flight suspension despite restrictions in the U.S. Kihara was responding to a question about a remark U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Carl Chebi that hundreds of U.S. military Ospreys won't be permitted to return to full missions until at least 2025 while the Pentagon addresses safety concerns. U.S. and Japanese Ospreys were grounded following a fatal November crash off Japan’s southern coast before resuming flights in March.

UN agencies urge Greece to shed light on migrant shipwreck that killed hundreds one year ago

  • AP

The United Nations’ refugee and migration agencies are criticizing Greece’s failure over the past year to shed light on one of the worst migrant shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea that left hundreds dead. UNHCR and IOM stressed the “critical” importance of a “comprehensive and conclusive” probe in a joint statement on the first anniversary of the tragedy off southern Greece. Left-wing groups are planning protests later Friday in Athens and other cities, as well as outside Greek diplomatic missions in other European countries. Only 104 people survived the foundering of the Adriana, a rusty boat smuggling up to 750 migrants from Libya to Italy.

New Hamsphire officials have issued two warnings of potentially dangerous algae blooms along parts of Lake Winnipesaukee, the state's largest lake. The department is advising visitors to avoid contact with the water and keep pets away. Symptoms of exposure can include skin irritation, stomach cramps, vomiting, nausea and diarrhea, among other conditions. The affected areas will be resampled on June 19.

AP Decision Notes: What to expect in Georgia's primary runoffs

A southwest Georgia Republican who went to prison for his actions inside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, may come a step closer to serving in Congress when the state holds primary runoff elections in some U.S. House and state legislative races. Tuesday's contests will determine who'll challenge two U.S. House members from opposite ends of Georgia’s political spectrum: Democrat Sanford Bishop and Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene. Bishop’s Republican general election opponent will be either a construction superintendent who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of illegally demonstrating inside the Capitol on Jan. 6 or a former U.S. Department of Education official in the Trump administration.

US Navy faces its most intense combat since World War II against Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels

  • By JON GAMBRELL - Associated Press

The U.S.-led campaign against Iran-backed Houthi rebels has turned into the most intense running sea battle the Navy has faced since World War II. That's what its leaders and experts tell The Associated Press, whose journalists visited U.S. ships off Yemen in recent days. The fight against the near-daily attacks by the Houthis has been overshadowed by the Israel-Hamas war raging in Gaza. More than 50 vessels have been clearly targeted by the rebels. Other fire has endangered shipping through the vital Red Sea corridor. It appears the warfare likely only will intensify, putting the U.S. and allies more at risk.

  • AP

Authorities say two people have been found dead after explosions in an underground parking garage at an apartment building in northern Switzerland and 11 others sustained minor injuries. The explosions Thursday evening rocked the Nussbaumen neighborhood of the small town of Obersiggenthal, northwest of Zurich. Police said Friday that the explosions appeared to have been caused by an accident, but didn't give more details. Swiss media reported that the explosions created a large cloud of smoke that was visible from afar and the explosions were heard from well outside the town. Police said that the fire at one point spread to several floors of the building. Several buildings were evacuated.

Putin pledges a cease-fire in Ukraine if Kyiv withdraws from occupied regions and drops NATO bid

  • By The Associated Press

Russian President Vladimir Putin is promising to “immediately” order a cease-fire in Ukraine and begin negotiations if Kyiv started withdrawing troops from the four occupied Ukrainian regions and renounced plans to join NATO. Such a deal appears a nonstarter for Kyiv, which wants to join NATO and has demanded Russia to withdraw troops from all of its territory. Putin made the remarks in a speech at the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow. His remarks came as leaders of the Group of Seven leading industrialized nations met in Italy and as Switzerland prepared to host scores of world leaders -- but not Russia -- this weekend to try to map out first steps toward peace in Ukraine.

Greece's prime minister tweaks his government to focus on cost of living and labor

  • AP

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is tweaking his Cabinet with a focus on cost-of-living and labor policies after his center-right party’s victory in last week’s European parliamentary elections. The pandemic and Russia’s war on Ukraine contributed to rising prices in the southern European country. Despite a recent dip in inflation, polls consistently show most Greeks’ top concern is cost of living. Takis Theodorikakos will head the development ministry that’s largely responsible for supervising consumer prices. He previously held the interior and public order portfolios. The key finance, foreign affairs and defense portfolios remain unchanged.

Former Germany defender Jérôme Boateng back in court for domestic abuse case

  • AP

The fourth trial of former Germany defender Jérôme Boateng on allegations of assault against his former partner has been interrupted just after it began. News agency dpa reports judge Susanne Hemmerich has appealed to Boateng’s defense and the public prosecutor to reach an agreement. The proceedings have been ongoing for the past six years, partly because of the coronavirus pandemic and partly because of judicial failures. This is the fourth time the same matter has been before the court. Boateng was previously found guilty of domestic violence against Sherin Senler. However, the process had to be started because of legal errors. Boateng’s attorney rejected the allegations. Boateng played 76 games for Germany.

This is the closest Al Horford has been to an NBA title, with the Celtics on verge of their 18th

Al Horford has never been this close to winning an NBA championship. Boston is on the verge of an unprecedented 18th title, which would be the first for the 38-year-old Horford. The Celtics could close out a four-game sweep of the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night. The game will be the center’s 185th in the playoffs. His teams have made the playoffs in 15 of his 17 NBA seasons. The only player with more career postseason games than Horford without an NBA title is Karl Malone. The Hall of Famer played in 193 from 1986-2004.

Chinese journalist who promoted #MeToo movement sentenced to 5 years in prison

  • AP

Supporters say a a Chinese journalist who promoted women's rights as part of the country's nascent #MeToo movement has been sentenced to five years in prison on charges of undermining state security. The verdict provided to The Associated Press stated that Huang Xueqin would also face a fine of 100,000 yuan ($14,000) for her alleged crime that underscores the ruling Communist Party's intolerance of any challenge to its control over political power in a system dominated by men at its upper echelons. Huang's release date was listed as Sept. 18, 2026, accounting for her earlier detention. A co-defendant, Wang Jianbin, was sentenced to three years and six months on the same charge.
