Clippers rumored to have interest in Warriors’ point guard Chris Paul (2024)

In today’s Dub Hub:

Veteran point guard Chris Paul continues to defy Father Time after finishing his 19th NBA season last year as a member of the Golden State Warriors. Paul demonstrated his continued effectiveness on the court last season, averaging 9.2 points and 6.8 assists in a limited role off the bench. Meanwhile, his leadership and dedication to the team’s overall success have earned high praises from players and coaches, highlighting his invaluable presence off the court.

Paul’s contributions have garnered attention across the league, with notable interest from the Los Angeles Clippers, his former team. NBA insider Marc Stein reports that the Clippers have “interest” in reacquiring Paul if he were to hit free agency.

With a team option on Paul’s contract, the Warriors can either decline it, making him a free agent, or exercise it to facilitate a potential trade where Paul could hypothetically be bought out and free to join any team like the Clippers.

NBA free agency and trade talk plus some coaching carousel chatter ... packaged for you here on another playoff Sunday | The Stein Line

The Clippers, I’m told, should be added to the list of teams that could emerge as a suitor for potential free agent Chris Paul.

Caveats are immediately required in this situation, since Paul might not even make it to free agency if the Warriors decide next month to keep him or trade hin to a team that wants to keep him.

I nonetheless heard this week that Paul and Kyle Lowry, whose free agency is looming after finishing last season in Philadelphia, are veteran guards said to interest the Clippers ... with a further variable to factor in stemming from Russell Westbrook’s still-to-be determined status. Westbrook has a $4 million player option for next season that he must decide on by June 29.

Clark’s clutch 3-pointer draws familiar sideline reaction from Klay | NBC Sports Bay Area

Klay Thompson knows a clutch 3-pointer when he sees one, and Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark left the Warriors star stunned with one of her own Friday against the Los Angeles Sparks.

Thompson was in attendance for the Fever’s 78-73 win over the Sparks, and the WNBA phenom’s logo triple in the fourth quarter helped Indiana grab its first win of the season — a familiar sight for the four-time NBA champion, who has hit plenty of clutch 3-pointers himself and plays alongside none other than Steph Curry.

And Thompson’s sideline reaction said it all.

Usman Garuba near a return to Madrid, Poirier on the way to Efes | Eurohoops

Real Madrid has convinced Usman Garuba to leave the NBA and return to Europe, per Eurohoops sources, joining the EuroLeague finalists with a long-term contract.

The 22-year-old Garuba, a product of the junior teams of Real Madrid got drafted in 2021 and left the Spanish powerhouse for the NBA where in three years he played 105 games (99 with the Rockets and six with Golden State).

While there’s still interest for him from the NBA, Garuba who finished the season in the G-League affiliated team of the Golden State Warriors, can be a key for Madrid’s future in the front line, practically replacing French big man Vincent Poirier.

Karl-Anthony Towns’ shooting woes continue in Wolves’ loss | ESPN

“He struggled, of course,” Finch said after Towns scored 14 points on 5-for-18 shooting, including going 0-for-8 from 3 as Minnesota dropped to one game away from elimination. “It was hard to watch at times.”

Finch might have wanted to cover his eyes the most in the fourth quarter, when Towns went scoreless on 0-for-4 shooting (0-for-3 from 3) as Minnesota was outscored 14-3 in the final five minutes.

“I’ve got to laugh,” Towns said afterward. “I’m putting up to 1,500 shots a day. Shot so well all playoffs, confidence extremely high. To be having these unfortunate bounces and these looks that are just not going in, it’s tough. It’s tough, for sure. I’m good confidencewise. Just got to keep shooting.”

Could a $100 million annual NBA player salary be coming? Plus, the new CBA goes into effect | The Athletic

The NBA could have its first $100 million salary by the 2032-33 season. That’s assuming a salary cap of $141 million next season, as the league currently projects, and then 10 percent cap-raises after that.

Under that forecast, the salary cap would hit more than $302 million, which would allow a number of players to cross the $100 million threshold. For example, a player in the first year of his supermax contract, which pays 35 percent of the cap, could make as much as $105.79 million during the 2032-33 season — that’s double the league-high $51.9 million Stephen Curry made this season. A player in the second year of a supermax contract that kicked in the season before could make $103.86 million that season. A player in the third year of a supermax contract that began during the 2030-31 season could make $101.41 million.

Kings and head coach Mike Brown have reportedly ‘tabled talks’ on a potential contract extension according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski

In case you missed it at Golden State of Mind:

Memorial Day Mailbag

Given the smoke coming out of the reports from those who cover the Warriors, I’d say Brandon Ingram is probably the top target right now. He’s entering the final year of his contract, and seems unlikely to re-sign with the Pelicans, so they’ll surely entertain offers. If they like Andrew Wiggins, there’s a natural fit there as long as the Warriors sweeten the pot. If they don’t like Wiggins, Chris Paul offers an expiring contract, and the Dubs can stack assets on top.

They should absolutely target Kevin Durant, but that doesn’t seem very feasible. They should poke around LeBron James, though that’s even less feasible.
