MDA needs volunteers for summer camps

The Muscular Dystrophy Association is in need of summer campvolunteers who will help young people with neuromuscular diseasesenjoy fun-filled, weeklong MDA summer camps across the country.Volunteer counselors must be at least 16 years old and able to liftand care for a young person between the ages of 6 and 21. Eachcounselor becomes a companion to a camper with a neuromusculardisease. Counselors help their campers with daily activities suchas eating, bathing and dressing, and in recreational activitiessuch as arts and crafts, swimming and horseback riding. Plans gear up for ‘Paws in the Park’

FALLBROOK – The Fallbrook Healthcare Foundation is getting readyto host its second

“Paws in the Park” event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 21 at LiveOak Park. One of the committee’s goals is to make the dog show evenbigger and better than last year’s inaugural event.

The community is invited to come browse the vendor andinformation booths, watch a variety of demonstrations in thedemonstration ring and participate in the dog show events whereprizes will be awarded to canine competitors in numerouscategories.

Events will include: Cutest Puppy, Smallest/Biggest Dog,Prettiest Dog (Female), Most Handsome (Male), So Ugly You’re Cute,Fastest Tail Wag, Best Trick and Owner Look-Alike (naturalresemblance, no costumes). Awards will be presented throughout theday following each event.

Fallbrook’s Honorary Mayor Rhonda Reinke and the newly crownedMiss Fallbrook will be on hand to present the Best of Show award atthe conclusion of the day.

Registration is required for the dog show and participants mustbe 18 or older. The registration process and collection of feeswill begin at 9 a.m. the day of the show. Cost is $3 per event. Candlelight vigil set for Iraq war

FALLBROOK – A candlelight vigil will begin at sunset or about 7p.m. March 18 at the Village Square at Main and Alvarado streets tomark the beginning of the fifth year of the war in Iraq. The warbegan on March 19, 2003.

The vigil is intended as a respectful ceremony to honor the wardead and to acknowledge the enormous price paid by the thousands ofwar-wounded troops and their families. Those who have a familymember or loved one who has suffered in the war are invited tooffer their own personal statement at the ceremony.

Father Bernard Rapp from St. Peter’s Catholic Church will leadthe group in a closing prayer, followed by the sounding of chimesto mark the death of 3,200 American troops killed in action.

Attendees are asked to bring a candle and cup holder with them.The ceremony will last approximately 30 minutes. Other vigils areplanned across the country.

Tubist to perform in Fallbrook

FALLBROOK – Fallbrook Music Society will present the solo debutof Chicago Symphony Orchestra principal tubist Gene Pokorny at 3p.m. March 18 in the Bob Burton Center for the Performing Arts onthe Fallbrook High School campus at 2400 S. Stage Coach Lane.

Conductor Jon Robertson will lead the Redlands SymphonyOrchestra in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Concerto for Tuba andOrchestra,” one of Williams’ most popular works, and an essentialpart of the tuba repertoire.

A native of Southern California, Pokorny attended the Universityof Redlands and graduated from the University of SouthernCalifornia. He has also played with the Israel Philharmonic, theUtah Symphony, the Saint Louis Symphony and the Los AngelesPhilharmonic.

In addition, Neilsen’s “Helios Overture” and Berlioz’s “Haroldin Italy” with viola soloist Kira Blumberg will be on the program.Blumberg is principal viola of the Redlands Symphony Orchestra anda member of Long Beach Symphony Orchestra and the Los AngelesMaster Chorale.

At 2:30 p.m., the conductor will give a preview of the upcomingconcert, which is open to all ticket holders.

ESCONDIDO – The city’s community reading project, EscondidoReads One Book, culminates on March 22 with an appearance byrenowned author Sandra Cisneros at the California Center for theArts, Escondido. Children learn to make matzah from scratch

OCEANSIDE – Chabad Jewish Center of Oceanside will sponsor afree Model Matzah Bakery, open to the public, from 4 to 5 p.m.March 14 at the Chabad Jewish Center, 1096 Gallery Drive. St. Mary to donate to WWC

OCEANSIDE – St. Mary Star of the Sea School, 515 Wisconsin Ave.,will make a donation at 8 a.m. March 14 to Camp Pendleton’s WoundedWarrior Center. During a campus assembly, the school will offer a$302 check to a center representative. The money was donated bystudents through the school’s Jeans for Jesus program. Lecture covers ‘La Ruta Quijote’

OCEANSIDE – MiraCosta’s Friends of the Library will present afree lecture with MiraCosta College English instructor John Kirwan,who hiked the roughly 800 kilometers of “La Ruta Quijote” in the LaMancha region of Spain while reading Cervantes’ “Don Quijote de laMancha” in the original Spanish. Kirwan will present a slide showof his journey by foot along this route and talk about this ruggedlandscape and its charming people.

Introduction to Knotting class offered

OCEANSIDE – Oceanside Museum of Art School of Art will hold aclass, “Introduction to Knotting,” from noon to 5 p.m. March 18 atthe school, 219 N. Coast Highway.

This versatile art form will be taught by fiber artist Carol E.Lang, who will provide all the necessary materials. Knotting canproduce both two-dimensional tapestries as well asthree-dimensional baskets and coiled sculptural pieces. The classwill explore the sculptural form using simple knots. The only toolsinvolved are the hands and a pair of scissors. The class is for alllevels of experience. Cost is $55 for museum members, $80 fornonmembers, plus a $10 materials fee.
