With the election just around the corner, Labour’s manifesto has been released🌳 No mention of biodiversity net gain specifically, only a commitment to ‘promote’ biodiversity - a bit loose! 💧 Nutrient neutrality gets a mention, insofar as unlocking new homes in effected areas ‘without weakening environmental protections’👇Link to the manifesto in the comments#bng #biodiversitynetgain #planning #nutrientneutrality

💡 Great article from Kennedys on the Biodiversity Gain Hierarchy 🌳 Key point that stood out to me is ‘whilst every development site is unique, it could be approaching six times more cost effective to purchase off-site biodiversity units compared to creating and maintaining a biodiverse habitat on-site for the required duration’ 🌍 There is still a need for developments to balance policy (national and local) requirements for on-site biodiversity provision with what is most cost effective, but this shows how the offsetting market can be a powerful win-win for getting landscape scale restoration underway #BNG #biodiversitynetgain

💧Nutrient neutrality update❓Interesting claims about housing delivery in the conservative manifesto released yesterday 📝 Page 52 talks about abolishing EU nutrient neutrality rules to unlock 100,000 new homes (link to manifesto in comments)🗞️ The same legislative amendment was attempted back in 2023 but Lords (rightly) flagged the risk to the environment and didn’t allow it (article link in the comments)🤔 Very unclear what has changed and what will be done differently this time, and at what environmental cost if it does go ahead

🌳 This is cool - BNG has the potential to sequester 650,000 tonnes of carbon per year 🌏 The UK’s GHG emissions for 2022 were estimated by Gov to be 402 million tonnes CO2 equivalent, so this is far from a solution on its own 📈 But coupled with other established markets such as woodland and peatland carbon codes, BNG potentially being established in other parts of the UK (eg Scotland) and emerging markets like voluntary biodiversity credits, habitat restoration and enhancement could be a powerful tool to sequester more meaningful amounts of carbon 👇Link to article from Business Green in the comments #biodiversitynetgain #BNG #carbon

With the polls suggesting an overwhelming labour majority, it’s great to see commitment to BNG from the shadow environment secretary Steve Reed made during his speech at the Future Countryside Conference in London yesterdaySteve said he wanted to see BNG work, emphasising that new homes will be built but not at the expense of the environment#biodiversitynetgain #bng #futurecountrysideconferenceFull article here https://lnkd.in/e8Gqp-Hf

BNG update - as of May, Gov have released the ‘suggested paragraphs for biodiversity gain information on the written decision notice.’ A useful reference point when considering what condition wording should look like for developments where a Biodiversity Gain plan will be needed, won’t be needed and in situations (eg small outline schemes) where it’s not known if a BG plan will be needed.Note the guidance document allows flexibility for LPAs to make their own decisions on the content of decision notices, and references that LPAs may consider seeking legal advice https://lnkd.in/e-C4KYWA#bng #biodiversitynetgain #ecology

Great report from CIEEM on carbon and ecosystems. Focuses on habitat management, restoration and creation with a detailed breakdown of the carbon sequestration potential of different habitats Thinking about how this links to BNG, it presents a good reference point to go beyond creating or enhancing the right habitats in the right places, but also giving the carbon capture potential of those habitats proper consideration A few thoughts:🌎We’re seeing a lot of neutral grassland creation through BNG. As the total carbon capture of each habitat is linked to its overall extent, ensuring low/intermediate grazing levels and no artificial fertilisation seems key to making sure we maximise its carbon sequestration potential 💦 Reedbeds could be valuable carbon stores, so using engineered wetlands to solve BNG, nutrient neutrality and carbon issues seems like an obvious ‘triple-threat’ 💡Could stacking carbon and biodiversity gains be a more effective way to encourage more landowners to consider creating habitat banks/getting involved with biodiversity restoration schemes, and ensure these schemes achieve the best outcomes for carbon and biodiversity? What do you think?https://lnkd.in/eJCFfrFr#biodiversitynetgain #bng #carboncapture #naturebasedsolutions

Interesting analysis of BNG costsShows the importance of understanding BNG constraints early in the lifecycle of a project, so we can make things as smooth as possible in the planning process As always the message is talk to us sooner rather than laterhttps://lnkd.in/gVuhf5A6#biodiversitynetgain #BNG #nature #ecology
