Greenville County teacher charged with cruelty to children, district confirms (2024)

A teacher at Ellen Woodside Elementary School in Greenville County, South Carolina, has been arrested and fired, according to the Greenville County School District. Peighton Ivie is charged with cruelty to children, the district announced Thursday. The Greenville County School District released the following statement: "We can confirm a computer lab manager at Ellen Woodside Elementary School, Mr. Peighton Ivie, was charged by law enforcement with Cruelty to Children as a result of a physical altercation with a student, and he is no longer employed with Greenville County Schools."We spoke with the law representing the family of that students who says this should have never happen to begin with. "The fact that you have an adult male to take advantage of the small, frail, precious commodities such as a fifth grade, 10-year-old that bears action and an investigation thoroughly," Karl Allen said.Ivie turned himself in at the Greenville County Detention Center on Thursday morning. The Greenville County Sheriff's Office said Ivie "intervened and broke up a crowd of students gathering in the school bathroom."Authorities said during that time, Ivie committed a physical assault while engaging with a student. An arrest warrant said the student was a 10-year-old fifth grader. The warrant said Ivie "lifted the child off the ground and forcefully threw him back on the ground."This action caused temporary pain and emotional distress to the victim, the warrant said. Allen said, now with Ivie charged they are looking to their next steps."So the next step would be to focus on the prosecution of that individual for the egregious conduct and to take the step of redressing or addressing the harm that has been done to this child the best way that we can so they can continue to have a normal life and want to continue their education," Allen said. As for the family, Allen said that student is getting the care they need and the family is doing all they can during this time. "The family is trying to wrap their arms around what has occurred. They did not expect and they did not send their child to the Greenville County School District for this type of treatment," Allen said.On Thursday night, Ivie's bond was set at $450, officials said.
